Grandma's Raisin Filled Cookies (2024)

I’m back for another Thanksgiving Thursday to share with you one of our favorite family cookies, Raisin Filled Cookies. Now if you don’t like raisins then you’re in good company but keep reading because these are so good. We have been eating these for as long as I can remember. They were my great grandma’s recipe and my mom makes them now and I just made them for the first time. Mine didn’t turn out as pretty as my moms do but they were just as delicious!

Ingredients:
– 1 3/4 cup flour
– 1/2 tsp. baking powder
– 1/2 tsp. salt
– 1/2 tsp. baking soda
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 1/2 cup shortening
– 1 egg
– 2 T. milk
– 1 tsp. vanilla

Filling
– 1 1/2 cup raisins, chopped (in blender or food processor)
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 1/2 cup water

Directions:
1. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, soda and sugar
2. Cut in shortening using pastry blender or knife and fork until mixture resembles coarse meal
3. Blend in egg, milk and vanilla until well blended and smooth
4. Roll out on floured board to 1/8″ thickness
5. Cut with 2 1/2 round cutter
6. Combine chopped raisins, sugar and water and cook for 15 minutes or until thickened, stirring constantly
7. Place 1 tsp. on each cookie and top with another cookie.
8. Seal edges together and prick middle with a fork
9. Bake in hot oven at 400 for 8 minutes

I love these cookies! They take a little work but they are delicious. My mom doubles the dough but not the raisin mixture. These cookies remind me of the holidays and I am so excited for Thanksgiving and then Christmas! What’s your favorite holiday cookie?

I don’t normally like raisins, but these look delicious! They sort of look like tiny pies! And I think the sweetness of the raisins would be yummy inside of a cookie!

I didn’t think anyone else made these cookies. My mother made these each Christmas with her favorite sugar cookie dough…all of us kids got a box full sent to our homes. Lots of work went into hers, but of course she always made no less than 100 each Christmas they were so in demand. After she died we refigured her recipe, you know, the “pinch of this, pinch of that” type of recipe, and now we continue the tradition and our grown children wait for their boxes at Christmas. She did use a milk wash over the tops, sprinkled with sugar before baking. So good!!

Wow! When I was a kid, my mom always made these cookies, so my brothers and I always make sure to bake these for the holidays. The recipe is the same, and I bet yours taste just as yummy as mine. My Mom is gone now, but her cookies live on and I am glad that others are enjoying what seems to be the same recipe as well. Happy baking! Enjoy those cookies because they really really are one of the best things about Christmas! Yum!

I have not tried to make these types of cookies before. Since I like raisins and these seem fairly easy to make I will give them a try. Yours look delicious! I love how the filling looks inside. Yum!

I make a version of this type cookie. I fill with cherry preserves or apricot preserves. I also prepare dates or figs similar to the raisin filling. Any type of thick fruit filling is delicious! Thanks for sharing. I had never considered using raisins!

I have never seen a recipe for these cookies! My great grandmother also made these. They were my dad’s favorites so my sister tried to learn the recipe from my grandma. It was difficult because great-grandma didn’t use a recipe and she didn’t have actual measuring cups. She used a teacup for the flour and sugar! My sister came pretty close in recreating it, but it’s nice to have a “real” recipe too! And it’s fun to see that we aren’t the only ones who grew up enjoying these yummy treats. Thank you!
