One Room Challenge (Week 2): Choosing a New Cabinet Color (2024)

Hey friends, welcome to the second week of the One Room Challenge!

One Room Challenge (Week 2): Choosing a New Cabinet Color (1)

I have not gotten very far on the kitchen refresh…like at all haha. I spent the majority of this past week finishing up our new dining room table and chairs. They are right next to the kitchen so I guess that kind of counts–right?

I mentioned last week in my plans that the first phase is going to be painting the lower cabinets a nice mushroom color.

When I tackled this space back in 2019 I painted the cabinets myself (tutorial here) to bring them from dated oak to fresh white.

The uppers have held up really great, however the lowers have received a lot of wear and tear and it’s definitely time for a fresh coat. I love the look of two tone kitchens and since I need to paint I decided that I may as well go for something different.

I picked up these Behr samples a few weeks ago and am really drawn to Sculptor Clay (top row, right) because it has a slight gray tone to it that blends well with our backsplash grout.

However it dawned on me a couple of days ago that when I painted the cabinets originally I used Benjamin Moore Advance paint since it is self leveling. I really liked how the finish turned out so I am going to grab a couple of swatches from that line to see if I can find a similar color. (I know that you can mix different brands of colors into different brands of paint, but in my experience that has been a hit or miss).

Pale Oak seems very promising but I want to get an actual sample to make sure it isn’t too light.

I am also sort of torn on what to do about the island. I could leave it white, but I am leaning towards matching it to the lower cabinets.

Since we are hosting Easter brunch this Sunday I don’t want to take apart the cabinets quite yet. The plan is to start tackling them early next week and since I’m using my sprayer again it should go fairly quickly.

I will be back next week hopefully with some good progress made!
