As the culture conquered the mainstream, it turned Black women, like Gloria Gaynor, Candi Staton, Thelma Houston and Donna Summer, and gay men, like Sylvester, into superstars and icons. However, the major success of the Bee Gees’ soundtrack album for Saturday Night Fever, and disco songs by artists like the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart, took the music further from its roots of inclusivity and freedom as straight white men started to embrace and repackage the sound.

On this date 120 years ago, legendary actor Peter Lorre came into the world (he was born László Löwenstein on June 26, 1904, in what is now Slovakia; he died in Los Angeles on March 23, 1964, at age 59). Lorre’s iconic face and voice can be seen and heard — often in smaller supporting roles, but occasionally in memorable lead appearances — in several films that Turner Classic Movies is airing today to commemorate the anniversary of his birth. The lineup features The Story of Mankind (1957), a dark fantasy with Lorre portraying Roman emperor Nero; Three Strangers (1946), a film noir representing one of several onscreen pairings between Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet; the drama Hotel Berlin (1945); the adventure drama They Met in Bombay (1941), led by Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell; The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), the British spy thriller that was the first film using this title directed by Alfred Hitchco*ck; the horror film The Beast With Five Fingers (1946), starring Robert Alda; You’ll Find Out (1940), a haunted house comedy also featuring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi; and M (1931), director Fritz Lang’s classic thriller led by Lorre, in just his third feature, as whistling child killer Hans Beckert, his most chilling performance and a role that likely typecast him as mostly playing villains the rest of his career.

Now that school is out, this leaves room for more hook-ups, breakups and as much trouble as the friends can get into behind Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty’s (Debra Jo Rupp) backs. Netflix promises plenty of new guest stars this season, including some ’90s icons; some of these names that have been revealed are Lisa Loeb, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Wayne Knight, Tommy Chong and Kadeem Hardison. Part 3 of That ’90s Show is slated to drop on Netflix at the end of October.

49th AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Nicole Kidman

Turner Classic Movies broadcasts the ceremony held at the end of April at which the American Film Institute (AFI) presented the latest of its annual Life Achievement Awards to Nicole Kidman in celebration of her award-winning career and impact on movies. Meryl Streep presented the award to Kidman, and other stars on hand to honor her included Lee Daniels, Ava DuVernay, Morgan Freeman, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jane Seymour and others. Following this 90-minute broadcast, TCM will air The Hours, the 2002 drama that earned Kidman a Best Actress Oscar win, and also stars Streep and Supporting Actress nominee Julianne Moore. After the film there will be a rebroadcast of the AFI ceremony.
