1 Understand your goals and audiences

Before you plan any community outreach activities, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and who you want to reach. What are the specific objectives and outcomes of your outreach efforts? Who are the key stakeholders and influencers in the communities you want to engage with? What are their needs, interests, and concerns? How can you align your messages and actions with their values and expectations? By answering these questions, you can tailor your outreach strategies and tactics to suit your goals and audiences.

Take your time and each community that you engage with will have a different approach - it is not a one size fits all. As you engage with a community ensure to hear from all parties withing the community ( young/ old / at home / business / key leaders in organizations etc.) as each will bring a voice from but also too their respective peers. Don't be rushed - it may take several meetings / months to engage with all stakeholders - so plan accordingly and plan early . If you have a deadline for a project - give lead time for follow-up after and before to ensure the engagement is on track or if changes are required.

It is important to begin the work with community based organizations that are reflective of the community you are serving. In the professional realm as program implementers we have this unproven belief that we know what’s best for a community in reality, it’s those that are closest to the problem that are closest to the solutions! You must have community buy-in.

2 Choose appropriate methods and channels

Engaging with communities is dependent on the context, purpose, and resources of your outreach project. Hosting or attending events, such as workshops or festivals, is a way to interact with community members and showcase your work. Alternatively, creating or joining online platforms like social media or webinars is an effective way to share information and invite participation. Developing or distributing materials like flyers or reports can provide useful information about your organization and how it benefits the community. Finally, building or supporting partnerships with other organizations that share your vision can be beneficial for connecting with the community.

4 Listen and learn from feedback

Community outreach is not a one-way street; it is essential to listen and learn from the feedback that you receive from your community audiences. This feedback can be either positive or negative, formal or informal, verbal or nonverbal, and it is a valuable source of information and insight that can help you improve your outreach efforts and outcomes. To listen and learn from feedback, consider asking for it through surveys, interviews, focus groups, or comment boxes. Additionally, respond to feedback with thank-you notes, follow-up calls, or social media posts. Finally, act on the feedback that you receive by making adjustments, corrections, or enhancements to show how much you value community members' opinions and suggestions.

Simply put, engaging communities should be about the communities and not the people implementing the engagement. So many times we have implemented self centred community engagements where the people we intend to help, don't feel that we are interested in them and what they do.In the word of Dale Carnagie, "Be genuinely interested in people"

In any society, the concept of a "community" generally points at a group of people that does not exercise their rights and aspirations to the fullest, or as it should be with any other fellow citizen. At the core of any approach is to accept the fact that any "community" (a group of people with similar characteristics or features or a group of people located geographically in a determined area, or even a group of people living sharing similar values and/or lifestyles by choice) must be considered equal regarding rights and duties, and must be reached with dignity and respect. We do not see such approach always, because there's an assistencialist vision from certain organizations towards certain communities.
