Three hundred seventy seven million, five hundred sixty thousand three hundred seventy seven thousand, five hundred sixty miles. What’s the problem?

Exactly. Just enough for 4 J tickets to FCO during high season!

I'm confident that the email did NOT really come from AA or Citibank.

ryan182Feb 24, 2024 1:14 am

I'm not, airline IT is notoriously crap (not limited to, but certainly including AA). Their systems are ancient, there's little appetite to innovate or adopt new technologies, and they pay peanuts compared to what anyone actually competent could get elsewhere and thus they retain talent that is commensurate with that pay/benefits/growth opportunities (which to be charitable I'll just describe as "below average"). I'm confident the OP did not get 377,560,377,560 miles credited to their account (or if they did those will not last long) but I wouldn't doubt that AA really did send that email, in error obviously.

The body had a breakdown like this:

Was this a broad error? I searched but didn't find a thread.

I'm hoping for a monoply error in my favor on this one

They just spit out all the numbers twice, right next to each other.

In other words, you get the correct numbers by splitting down the middle and taking either (identical) half:

575
371,985
5,000
377,560

Did anyone else read this in the tune from Rent?

For kicks and giggles try to book 10 RT F reward rips to SYD and put them on hold. I would love to hear what happens.

Enough miles for ConciergeKey?

Key here is to first check the email address as it could be phishing threat like those other financial and purchase scam emails. OMG they made a huge mistake, instantly click on one of the links and you are now infected. Best to log in directly from a browser to check the account.

Do the numbers I provided above look about right? If so, it's an AA IT screwup. If not, it could be sloppy scammer.

I would love to work for an airline in their IT dept (and constantly get asked by friends/family why I don't), but for the number of different jobs I'm qualified for, the pay is just not there, even including the amount I spend on personal flights (and it's standby, which is apparently getting harder to use, and will likely get even harder now that it's app based). They also don't offer remote positions, so I'd have to move, and I just don't want to go back doing a 9-5 in a regular office (over the remote and travel (for client site visits) gig that I have now).

AA isn't the only one to have an error of repeating some numbers accidentally. For a while, every time I'd log into my Alaska Airline account, entering my Alaska number (let's say it was 123456), on the next screen it would enter "123456,123456" and then say that it was an invalid number, and I'd have to edit one of copies out to log in.

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 9:56 pm.
