<![CDATA[Times West Virginian: Obituaries]]> (7)

Carolyn Jean (Davis) Headley, daughter of the late Roy Bailey and Lillie May (Knight) Davis, passed away on February 17, 2021 at Country Rest Home in Greenwood, DE. She was born in Fairmont, WV on February 4, 1938 and had just turned 83.Carolyn graduated from East Fairmont High School and attended Fairmont State College. She was a motivated college student, attending summer classes while working two jobs, and graduated in 1959 with a BA in Education in just three years. After college, Carolyn married Jackie Headley, moved to Grafton, WV, and started a family. However, employment opportunities were slim, so they moved to Harford County, MD in 1962 where she was hired as an elementary school teacher in Dublin. A year later she transferred to the Home Economics Dept. at Edgewood High School, where she walked to work because she didn't have a driver's license until the mid-1960's. Carolyn continued her education attending summer classes, nights and weekends too, until she received her Master's in Education. Carolyn retired from teaching after 33 years with a legacy of fairness, generosity, and mentoring students that extended beyond the classroom to neighborhood children.Carolyn and Jack were from humble beginnings and worked hard for everything they had. In later years, she cared for Jack at home for 13+ years before he passed in 2013. In the middle of Jack's health issues, they moved from Maryland to Lewes, DE in 2007. There Carolyn enjoyed book club, ladies' luncheons, and trips to see her family, the Amish country or Williamsburg. She also enjoyed family history. Carolyn loved taking care of her house and filling it with one-of-a-kind folk-art pieces and antiques. Her other passion was working outside and tending to her plants and flowers. The outside of the house was as well-kept as the inside. In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Jackie Headley; her brothers: LeRoy Davis (Virginia "Jenny Sue") and Allen Ray Davis; sisters: Kathleen Doris Davis, Mary Jo Davis and an infant sister. She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law Robin Lea Boyd and Michael Boyd of Stewartstown, PA; one remaining sister, Janet Davis of Fairmont, WV; nephew Glen Davis (Damaris); niece Karen Montelone (Joe) both of Ohio; many great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins: Virginia Ellis, Jean Davis, Chris Martin, Debbie Knight, Roselean Reese, Susan Dempsey, Larry Lawson, Terry Lawson, and Gloria Hainey all of WV and Iris Hyson of Virginia. Carolyn is also survived by nephew, John Arthur of Iowa; and nieces: Sharon Moore of AZ and Margaret Zenn of CO.Carolyn's courageous decision to quit chemo and live the last months of her life with poise and dignity is an inspiration to us all. She managed her affairs and met with friends almost up until the end. Carolyn was overwhelmed by her friends and neighbors who selflessly volunteered meals, assistance, and true friendship throughout her battle with cancer. She was truly blessed. As with Jack, she chose to donate her body to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Research. A private burial at Oak Grove Baptist Cemetery near Grafton, WV will occur at a later date.In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that in her memory each person perform a genuine act of kindness for someone in need.Arrangements have been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins - Lodge Chapel, Lewes, DE.

<![CDATA[Times West Virginian: Obituaries]]> (8)

Barbara Ann (Fleming) Marsh, 86, of Thousand Oaks, California, died unexpectedly Friday (Dec. 23, 2016). Throughout her life, she was a vibrant member of the community, an avid astronomy enthusiast and deeply interested in current events, modern technology and genealogy. Barbara was a devoted church member, friend, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose memory will be cherished by many. A 10th-generation West Virginian, she was the daughter of Fred and Hazel Fleming. Barbara was born July 4, 1930, and raised in the small coal mining town of Monongah where her family has lived on Fleming Hill since the early 1800s. Hailing from this close-knit community (population 1,000), Barbara maintained ties with family and friends from Monongah throughout her lifetime. The town offered an idyllic childhood: the family homestead on Fleming Hill with ducks, chickens, a pony and the creek out back. Barbara will be buried holding a tiny bottle of Fleming Hill soil, a memento of the beloved hamlet she called home, even after decades on the West Coast. Barbara and her family moved to California in the early 1950s and to Thousand Oaks in 1959. From 1964 until retirement in 2012, Barbara served the Conejo Valley community, first as a real estate agent, then as a broker. A pioneer of sorts, Barbara was among the first women real estate professionals in the area. She began her career at Jim Morris Realty then opened her own real estate firm, Marsh/Deseret Realty, and was an agent with Brown Realty and Prudential over the years. She was repeatedly honored for her achievements and served as director of the Association of Realtors. Barbara was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for over half a century and was one of the first congregation members in the Conejo Valley. During that time, she held several callings, including scheduling events, librarian and Temple work. Barbara worshipped and served alongside generations.Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Eugene Marsh; her daughter, Rebecca Sue Marsh; her brother, Fred Fleming; as well as her parents, Fred D. Fleming and Hazel R. Cleavenger Fleming. Barbara is survived by her sons, Lance Douglas Marsh (wife, Marilee); Kevin Marsh (wife, Mary); brother David Fleming (wife, Susie); four grandchildren, Michael Marsh, Katie Marsh Lavallee, Shauna Marsh and Eric Marsh; five great-grandchildren, Haylee, LilleeKate and T.J. Lavallee and Mackenzie and Kimberly Marsh. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 35 South Wendy Road, Newbury Park, California 91320. A graveside burial service will follow, at noon at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park, 5600 Lindero Road, Westlake Village, California. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Make-a-Wish Foundation of the Tri-Counties (in the name of Barbara's daughter, Rebecca Sue Marsh), 4001 Mission Oaks Blvd., Suite F, Camarillo, California 93012.

The Lord saw you were getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he put his loving arms around you and whispered come with me. With tearful eyes, we watched you and saw you pass away. Although we clearly loved you, we could not make you stay. A precious heart stopped beating, hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best. We are consoled in knowing that the angels have wrapped their arms around you and given you peace at last. Love, Pat, Harry, Peggy.

Mary “Agnes” Wegman (Tchinski) died Wednesday (June 6, 2012) in Guilford County, North Carolina. Agnes was born in Fairmont on Dec. 6, 1924. She was first-generation American; her parents immigrated from Poland coming here through Ellis Island. Agnes graduated from Barnes School and Fairmont Senior High with honors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her brothers, Louis, John, Eddie and Alex; her sisters, Frances and Helen. She is survived by her son, Charlie and, as Agnes liked to call her, his “lady friend” Carol Price. Agnes always enjoyed keeping a beautiful yard and garden, using the knowledge shared with her by her father, James. She often told stories of how she helped him in his expansive garden where he raised all sorts of food for his large family. Agnes was quite an artist. She painted in oils and water colors, and her works adorn the walls of many homes. She had an eye for style and a mind for economy, sewing most of her own clothes with some of her best work created from her imagination. She so loved her weekly shopping trip to the Fresh Market on bargain day. As a young woman, Agnes worked at Westinghouse in accounting and often told us how proud she was to have been trusted to write all those checks for thousands of dollars and never made one mistake. After her husband Charles was transferred to Greensboro, N.C., Agnes worked for Hargrove “Skipper” Bowles as his personal secretary up until his death. She was always so proud of the confidential, behind-the-scenes work she did there, and of her involvement with his projects such as raising the funds to build the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill. Agnes was loved by everyone who had the pleasure to know her. She was always sharp of wit, quick to offer help to anyone who needed it, and she was always mindful to return every favor. As she loved to say, “The first hundred years are the hardest, after that ya’ don’t give a darn.” Always a fine woman, a wonderful mother, a good friend. She will be sorely missed. Donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220. Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home is assisting the family. Agnes’ obituary and online condolences may be viewed at lambethtroxlerfuneralhome.com.
